M.Sc Microbiology

Program Overview

M.Sc. in Microbiology is a two-year postgraduate program in microbiology segregated into four semesters. The objective of this course is to produce intellectual and proficient microbiologists. It is done by enhancing the abilities and skills of students for application of microbiology theories and expertise in the live problems faced by the industry. 

Microbiology is a large discipline with many different specialties. It encompasses various disciplines such as Microbial Diversity and Systematics, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Medical Microbiology, Applied Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Industrial Microbiology etc. Microbiology has both basic and applied aspects. Research and development in microbiology has led to the emergence of two new fields, namely molecular biology and genetic engineering. Microbiology is one of the most popular upcoming streams in the applied sciences. The subject explores the relevance of microbes to the mankind, by enlightening students about their useful and harmful aspects.

The main focus of the program is to give basic training on various aspects of Microbiology. The course is aimed at sharpening the all-round scientific skills which is achieved through group discussions, term-paper assignments, seminars and tutorials over and above regular class-room teaching. Course also provides training through rigorous laboratory exercise, industry visit and on full semester for dissertation training along with entrepreneurship development program.

The program was started in 2018 currently more than 35 students are enrolled.


  • B.Sc. in any biological and allied subjects.

  • Microbiologists serve various industries: Food Industry, Beverage Industry, Clinical Diagnostic Laboratories, Environmental Agencies, Agriculture Industry, Hospitals, Pharmaceutical Industries
  • Distinct roles as a Microbiologist: Bacteriologist, virologist, mycologist
  • Scientific Officer: BARC, ISRO, DRDO, CSIR Laboratories, IPR, TIFR, ONGC, etc.
  • Government Jobs in the biology domain.
  • Academic job opportunities in colleges and universities include research assistants, lab managers.
